DERRY Girls star Siobhán McSweeney has poured cold water on speculation that the characters will return for a movie, as they have been left “in a really good place”.
The Bafta award-winning actress has suggested the chances of a spin-off movie of the hit Channel 4 sitcom are unlikely, when quizzed over whether she would like to see its characters return to screens.
Her comments follow Derry Girls writer Lisa McGee telling the Irish News last year that although “you never say never” to the idea of a movie, she wanted to focus on other projects.
“As much as we’ll miss it, we have to move on from there,” Ms McGee said.
Following her win at Sunday’s Bafta TV awards in London, Ms McSweeney, who plays Derry Girls fan favourite Sister Michael, told the Radio Times the green light for a film “isn’t down to me at all”.
"I also think that, you know, the thing that also makes shows great is knowing when to end them as well and not sort of ruining what was good about it by dragging it out for years and years and seasons and seasons,” she said.
"So I feel like we’ve left all the characters in a really good place – in a place of hope and a place of peace. And yeah, why not leave them there for the time being?"
"Sure look, I see Sister Michael every time I open my eyes into the mirror so she’s always with me."
The Cork actress added on the idea of returning to play Sister Michael in a film: “Like I said, where we’ve left them is in a good place – and it would never be down to me anyway.
"I mean I became an actor to live as many lives as possible.”
