The family and friends of a Co Armagh woman who died in a horror road collision last year have raised more than £22,400 by taking part in the Belfast marathon.

Mother-of-four Ciara McElvanna (44) died in the Royal Victoria Hospital days after a four-vehicle collision near Markethill last November.

Friends Patrick Grimley (40) and his wife Ciera also lost their lives as a result of the accident.

Those who died were travelling home to Madden in Co Armagh in a taxi from Dundalk where they had been celebrating Mr Grimley’s 40th birthday, when the collision took place.

A fundraising page set up last year to support the three Grimley children raised more than £441,000.

A Just Giving page established in memory of Ms McElvanna by her sister Cáilín Haddock, has raised more than £22,400 to date.

The cash will be donated to the charity Revive, which supports the work of the Regional Intensive Care Unit and High Dependency Unit in the Royal Victoria Hospital, Belfast.

Ms Haddock thanked all those who have dug deep in memory of her sister.

“We are deeply thankful to all those who have supported us through both donations and words of support,” she said.

“Ciara was such an important part of all our lives and we miss her every second of every day.”

She also thanked those who cared for her sister in her final days.

“By running the marathon we are hoping to pay tribute to a life that was spent dedicated to helping others, and to continue her legacy by raising funds for such a vital service in our community,” she said.

“To the RICU, thank you.

“Thank you for all the love and care you provided to Ciara.

“There are no amount of money our words that can quantify our gratitude to your nurses and staff.”
